The long awaited National Livestock Development Policy (NLDP) was launched yesterday the 8th April 2021 by the Minister of Fisheries and Livestock, Pro Nkandu Luo at Mulungushi International Conference Center. The policy will be implemented over the 4 year span from 2021 to 2024 with the expected expenditure of 1.45billion kwacha. The policy focuses on transforming the Livestock industry in order to enhance social economic development. The policy specific objectives includes promoting sustainable livestock production and productivity, promote standards and quality of livestock and its products, strengthen livestock research and development, promote sustainable management of farm animal genetic resource, improve animal welfare and livestock production environment to promote animal health service delivery as well as improve management of livestock and water resources and finally establish a livestock information management system.
In addition to the above, the ministry also launched a client service charter whose aim is to improve the Ministry service delivery to the members of the public. It should be noted that this is the first policy of of its kind since the ministry was separated from agriculture. As a member of the livestock industry, the Poultry association of Zambia was pleased to witness such a launch as the development process has taken longer.
