After 8 years of lobbying government on the removal of duty on premixes, this has finally been given. Premixes form a major cost center in the stock feed production. The Zambian government in 2007 gave an offer to Southern African Development Community (SADC) for products that should come in duty free. In an effort to diversify the economy away from dependency on mining, government is focusing more on Agriculture and Livestock as a way of attaining economic resilience. In attaining that, government decided to remove customs duty on various inputs that are used in the manufacturing of stock feed. This move which has been heavily supported by the Poultry Association of Zambia as it will create a big relief to the poultry farmers since the move will translates into lower cost of feed. Stock feed accounts for more than 65% of the total of chicken production.
